Volunteer Firefighter's and Volunteer Ambulance Worker's Guide to Workers' Compensation Benefits
Medical Care
The injured or ill volunteer member who is eligible for compensation will receive necessary medical care directly related to the original injury or illness and the recovery from his/her disability.
He/she is free to choose any physician, chiropractor, podiatrist, psychologist (upon referral from an authorized physician), outpatient clinic of a hospital or health maintenance organization authorized to give medical care by the Chairman of the Workers' Compensation Board.
The cost of necessary medical services is paid by the subdivision or the insurance carrier.
The doctor may not collect a fee from the patient. If the injured volunteer
member's claim is disputed by the subdivision or insurance carrier, the doctor may require
the claimant to sign form A-9
. This guarantees that
the volunteer member will pay the medical bills if the Workers' Compensation Board
disallows the claim or a claim is not pursued.
